The Mass Extinction Of Humans
I read this article today and fear that I have finally given up hope for the human race.
I've always tried to stay informed about the environment and climate change. In my opinion, taking care of our planet should have been a priority. Somehow, though, it never was.
Slowly, we are watching our world die and the common man feels helpless to stop the rolling giant of industrial expansion. Even when we do speak out or protest, there are never enough voices to make a difference. People are more concerned about subjects like legalizing weed or gay marriage or racism. These are all things to consider, but there is a larger concern. Staying alive.
We don't stand united as the human race, even though we desperately need to. Our system is broken and it needs to be fixed, but where is the motivation to do anything about it? Our government keeps patching the holes, but the real problems remain.
Why?
Because the human race is ultimately selfish. Most individuals only care about something that has an immediate impact on them. They focus on their own agendas and concerns. The death of our planet is something they shrug off as a distant problem. Meanwhile, the likelihood of our future offspring surviving diminishes. We have a beautiful, wonderful world and we are callously spoiling it.
Humans are the worst plague this planet has ever seen. And it's such a shame because we also had the potential to be the best cure.
I wish we could all look beyond our own lives and pitch in to stop what is happening to the world. But that would require a level of enlightenment I think is beyond us. Might as well ask the world to hold hands and sing Kum Ba Yah.
It looks like we are not going to become the advanced race we dreamed about for so many years. We will just be another chapter in Earth's history. Here, and then gone. Like the dinosaurs. But at least they didn't bring about their own destruction.
